Lucatec® Mask 6.1.0 - 2017-11-16
Major Service Release
  • Performed a major rewrite of the mechanism used internally to maintain state information about unsent mail items. The following two fixes were a result of this rewrite:
    • Resolved an issue where sent items would not be properly processed (i.e. moved) if they were saved prior to sending.
    • Resolved a regression issue where creating copies of drafts would cause Lucatec® Mask to "forget" where to store the sent item.
  • Began making Lucatec® Mask handle profiles connected to multiple distinct Exchange Servers with distinct Global Address Lists. This touches on a wide variety of symptoms, including garbled sender display names and incorrect user information returned by sig macros.
  • Resolved an issue where changing the sender of an inline response (Outlook 2013 and later) would sometimes result in an incorrect signature being inserted.
  • Further optimisations to "Use original recipient as sender" feature:
    • Lucatec® Mask would still sometimes use an incorrect sender when multiple valid senders were in the list of recipients.
    • Also, the "Use original recipient as sender" feature will now scan the members of distribution lists for valid senders.
    • Added tweak to allow ignoring recipients not contained in the list of Valid Senders
  • Fixed an issue only occuring with Outlook 2016 against some versions of Exchange where messages created by an external application could either not be delivered or stayed stuck in the Outbox if there was only one account in the current profile.
  • Fixed an issue where Lucatec® Mask would sometimes erroneously signal a manual change to the From field when sending on one's own behalf.
  • Performed some major internal restructuring to improve stability and memory usage, especially in the code handling the processing of sent items.
  • Performance optimisations for customers who use neither signature insertion nor pre-send verification features.
  • Added a context menu entry for retroactively scanning a Sent Items folder for erroneously unprocessed items.
  • Fixed an issue where the license server setup would sometimes produce an inconsequential error message on fresh installs.
  • Resolved a minor issue that sometimes caused the text cursor to initially be placed at the beginning of the signature rather than at the beginning of the message.
  • Fixed an issue where Lucatec® Mask would sometimes insert empty signatures after switching between languages.
  • Made Lucatec® Mask cope more gracefully with corrupted Outlook installations
  • The uninstaller will no longer remove user settings in case the user simply wants to reinstall or upgrade. Please note that the recommended upgrade procedure is to simply install over the existing installation without uninstalling first as this will keep all existing settings and if necessary even migrate them to a newer format.
Lucatec® Mask 6.0.0 SR1 (64bit only) - 2017-05-23
Hotfix Release
  • Fixed an 64bit-specific regression issue where on 64bit installs there would sometimes be an "Access Violation" error on message creation.
  • Resolved an issue where there would sometimes be an error message about a "failure to prepare message options" on message creation.
Lucatec® Mask 6.0.0 - 2017-05-18
Major Technology Release
  • It is now possible to associate signatures directly with Senders, rather than just with folder/mailbox contexts.
  • When changing the Sender on an already created message, the signature will be changed accordingly as well.
  • Added support for Outlook profiles with multiple accounts: Lucatec® Mask will now make sure to always use the correct sending account for each sender.
  • Completely rewrote how Lucatec® Mask sets messages' Sender, thus improving compatibility with Outlook 2010 and later.
  • Completely rewrote how Lucatec® Mask handles message meta information, thus improving compatibility with Outlook 2010 and later.
  • Switched to a new licensing backend, based on online activation. The main benefits of this new mechanism are:
    • You can now choose between two license models for Lucatec® Mask: "Local" or "Network". The latter comes with its own light-weight license server that allows you to easily manage all of your licenses in a single place while the former is the ideal, hassle-free solution for small-business or even single-user customers.
    • No more Modification Keys! In order to extend the number of licenses or enable optional Enterprise features all you have to do is make the purchase and hit Reactivate (or just wait a couple of days).
    • No more having to live with misspelt or incorrect licensee names! All license information can now be changed after the fact.
  • Another side effect of the new licensing mechanism is that trials now follow the more common 30-day evaluation formula rather than the mix of fixed expiry dates and limited number of sent emails we had before.
  • Added button for direct access to support forum to Backstage View.
  • Lucatec® Mask was successfully tested with Outlook 2016 and Exchange 2013 and is now officially supported on those platforms (provided the specific combination of versions of Outlook, Exchange and Windows is supported by Microsoft as well).
  • Improved algorithm behind the "Use original recipient as sender" feature which would sometimes fail to correctly identify the correct sender for replies and forwards.
  • Fixed an issue where Lucatec® Mask sometimes failed to properly auto-detect the sender associated with primary mailboxes from secondary accounts.
  • Resolved a long-standing issue that prevented you from using §§-style signature macros in RTF-signatures.
  • Fixed an installer issue that could cause Lucatec® Mask not to load into 64bit Outlook 2010.
  • Resolved an issue where messages could sometimes not be delivered on Exchange 2013 and later. As a consequence of this we had to remove the possibility to change the sender from the pre-send Message Options dialog popup. If you need to change the sender you now have to do it via the "From"-dropdown button before hitting Send. You can still use the dialog for adjusting the target folder, though.
  • Fixed an issue where manually changing the Sender of a message would sometimes be misinterpreted as clearing it.
  • Fixed an issue where the order of controls on the tabs of the configuration dialog would sometimes be jumbled.
  • Fixed an issue where the installer would sometimes unnecessarily create empty registry keys
  • Adjusted logo graphics to new Lucatec design.
  • Removed support for Outlook 2007 and older.
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
Lucatec® Mask 5.0.5 SR1 (64bit only) - 2016-10-24
Hotfix Release
  • Fixed an issue that prevented installation of the 64bit version on some systems.
Lucatec® Mask 5.0.5 - 2016-09-16
Hotfix Release
  • Fixed an issue where the addin would no longer be able to recognize a mail-enabled Public Folder and detect the email address associated with ít on Exchange Server 2013 and later.
  • Fixed an issue where Outlook 2016 would crash when closing additional main windows.
  • Fixed an issue where the Message Options dialog would sometimes not be shown before sending, even though the relevant setting was activated.
  • Fixed an issue where the option to "Use Sender Options of Original Recipient" often failed to set the target folder correctly when replying/forwarding from within a Public Folder.
  • Updated all URLs (e.g. the one used by the Update Checker) to point at lucatec-mask.com.
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2017-02-28
Lucatec® Mask 5.0.4 - 2016-01-07
Service Release
  • Addressed an issue where corrupted mail item properties would result in items being sent with incorrect message options. Please note that this change does not actually fix the corrupted properties (the reason why this occurs is still unresolved as of this writing) but merely allows users to verify and correct them manually themselves before sending.
  • Improved code robustness against issues occurring after manual sender changes.
  • Established basic compatibility with Outlook 2016.
  • Improved upward compatibility for future Outlook versions.
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2016-10-30
Lucatec® Mask 5.0.3 SR2 - 2015-06-17
Hotfix Release
  • Fixed a rare issue where sent items might be sent on behalf of a different sender than what is shown in Sent Items.
  • Implemented workarounds for two rare issues that could occur in Offline mode.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2016-06-30
Lucatec® Mask 5.0.3 - 2015-02-18
Minor Service Release
  • Fixed a regression issue that resulted in superfluous save prompts and empty draft items when replying to an opened message.
  • There's a new set of signature macros, named $$USERDISPLAYNAMEREV$$ and $$SENDERDISPLAYNAMEREV$$ which will output the words/elements of a user's display name in reverse order. This can for example be useful if your users' display names are set up to show as "Lastname, Firstname" but in your signatures you want the name to be displayed in proper order. (Another approach would be to use $$UserDetail:givenName$$ $$UserDetail:sn$$ - consider the new macro a performance optimization as it does not require an AD lookup.)
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2015-08-31
Lucatec® Mask 5.0.2 SR1 - 2014-12-01
Minor Service Release
  • Fixed a regression issue that was causing the 64bit version of Outlook 2013 to hang on startup under Windows 8.1 again.
Lucatec® Mask 5.0.2 - 2014-10-07
Minor Service Release
  • Both the addin and the installer are now signed with a digital certificate and will now work in high-security environments.
  • Fixed an issue where sometimes an incorrect signature would be inserted when replying via Outlook 2013's Inline Response pane.
  • Fixed an issue where user interface texts would appear blank on Office 2013x64 on Windows 8.1
  • Fixed an issue where the option "In folders other than Inboxes, save replies with original message" was ignored when there also was an entry under Default Message Options ("Always store items sent by you in this folder").
  • Fixed an issue where on pre-Vista versions of Windows (e.g. Server 2003) Lucatec® Mask would sometimes not initialize properly, most notably resulting in an empty list of Valid Senders.
  • Further improvements to sender handling in complex corner cases.
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2015-04-30
Lucatec® Mask 5.0.1 - 2014-05-19
Minor Technology Service Release
  • Added full support for Outlook 2013's new Inline Response feature.
  • Fixed a regression that caused senders set via Default Message Options to be discarded prior to sending in many cases.
  • Fixed an issue where Lucatec® Mask could get deactivated by Outlook 2013 if connected to Exchange over a slow network connection.
Note: This issue still persists when you use the addin's Out-of-Office Synchronisation feature. This will be fixed in 5.1.0.
  • Fixed a low-level problem that manifested itself as several seemingly unrelated quirks, mostly affecting users of either Office 2003 (or earlier) or 64bit versions of Office. The most obvious symptom were missing or random texts in the configuration UI. However, this issue was also responsible for various cryptic error messages indicating problems like "stream read error", "Abstract error", "Failed to set data for..." and similar things.
  • Resolved a minor performance issue that especially slowed down deep profile scans over large mailbox/folder hierarchies.
  • Fixed an issue where the Message Options toolbar button would sometimes be displayed with a pink background.
  • Fixed an issue where the "Office Hook" component (only needed for Office 2003 and earlier) would get incorrectly installed when running setup in Silent mode.
  • Fixed an issue where 64bit Outlook 2013 would hang on startup on Windows 8.
  • Fixed an issue where Outlook would occasionally become unresponsive when the addin tried to display a modal dialog window (Outlook 2007 and above).
  • Slightly improved fault tolerance against Outlook-internal errors at the MAPI-level
  • Trial expiry date set to 2014-11-30
Lucatec® Mask 5.0.0 - 2014-03-17
Major Technology and Feature Release
  • If you are updating from 4.0.1 or earlier, please first make sure that no unsent messages remain in your Outbox folder. Otherwise they will not be processed by the addin when they eventually do get sent.
  • Outlook 2013 is now fully supported - with the exception of the new "Inline Response" which will follow in the next service release.
  • There is now a 64bit-version of the addin available for the 64bit editions of Outlook 2010 and 2013.
  • Massive improvements to startup performance: Everyone should see a decrease in Outlook startup time of at least 3 seconds, typically more.
  • At long last we have come up with a solution to a long-standing Outlook issuefeature that was affecting Lucatec® Mask, namely that the addin was not able to handle new messages that were created using the "Send to" command in third-party applications, such as Windows Explorer, Adobe Reader and such. For now, this only applies to Outlook 2007 and later, but we are looking into porting this back to Outlook 2003 as well.
  • Most error messages and notifications that may appear during Outlook startup, such as license warnings or update notifications will no longer be displayed as a dialog box, but rather as a discrete "Notification Bar" along the top of your main Outlook window.
  • Implemented a performance optimization that should noticeably speed up the creation of new messages, especially when Cached Mode is turned off.
  • You can now use the following human-readable placeholders in signature naming rules instead of the previous unintuitive notation:
    • $DISPLAYNAME$ (previously %0:s)
    • $NAME$ (previously %1:s)
    • $SMTPNAME$ (previously %2:s)
    • $SMTPADDRESS$ (previously %3:s)
  • Fixed an Outlook 2013-compatibility issue where enabling or disabling signature insertion and automatically populating the "From"-selection list were no longer working.
  • Resolved a regression issue introduced in version 4.0.3 where the Message Options dialog would not be auto-displayed before sending when the recipient exclusion list was left empty.
  • Improved reliability of sender change detection in some corner cases.
  • Fixed a regression issue that could lead to sent items not being stored to the correct folder in some rare cases.
  • Replaced localization backend with a different product, making it even easier to incorporate user-generated translations. Please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you are interested in translating Lucatec® Mask to your language.
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2014-09-30
Lucatec® Mask 4.0.3 SR1 - 2013-09-11
Minor Service Release
  • Fixed an issue where when opening multiple new message windows Lucatec® Mask would fail to pick up changes to any but the message that was created first. This could lead to sent messages being stored to the wrong mailbox/folder.
  • Fixed an issue that could lead to various errors when the read-only attribute was set on signature files.
  • Fixed an issue where the installer would incorrectly complain about an expired license when upgrading from a licensed copy of Lucatec® Mask 3.x or earlier.
  • Fixed an issue where the installer would sometimes hang after opening the configuration dialog.
  • Fixed a rare issue where message properties might become inconsistent after manually changing the sender to someone other than what Lucatec® Mask had determined upon message creation. Most notably this resulted in sent messages remaining in the primary user's Sent Items folder.
  • Implemented a minor performance improvement by locally caching sender resolution information. This should speed up message creation whenever you send on behalf of another account more than once during an Outlook session.
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2014-08-31
Lucatec® Mask 4.0.2 SR1 - 2013-07-03
Major Service Release
  • Before installing this update, please make sure that no unsent messages remain in your Outbox folder. Otherwise they will not be processed by the addin when they eventually do get sent.
  • Fixed an issue where, when working on a Terminal Server and multiple users with similar user names are working on the same mailbox, sent items might be handled multiple times.
  • Fixed an issue where Lucatec® Mask would get confused by server-side changes to the primary SMTP address associated with a valid sender entry.
  • Fixed a hypothetical issue where it was possible for Lucatec® Mask to confuse two valid sender entries with each other.
  • Fixed an issue where a valid sender entry would be removed from the list on the next Outlook start after having edited it.
  • Fixed an issue with deploying license keys via registry to users with roaming profiles.
  • Made addin more robust against possible corner cases related to Outlook's "Resend" functionality.
  • Implemented a workaround for an issue where modifications to messages that were based on .oft-templates were sometimes lost on send.
  • Implemented experimental workaround for an issue were Lucatec® Mask would occasionally stop processing sent items half way through a running Outlook session. If you are experiencing this problem, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for information on how to enable this tweak.
  • Minor performance improvement during message preparation
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2013-11-30
Lucatec® Mask 4.0.1 - 2012-01-30
Major Service Release
  • Finally managed to get to the root of the issue where sent items were no longer processed after migrating to Exchange 2010 with the help of several customers and Microsoft support (thanks to all involved!). This latest change renders the alternative polling mechanism, introduced in recent releases as a workaround to this issue, unnecessary. It has consequently been removed from the product.
  • Updated a third-party library that was responsible for a minor startup performance issue and erratic program behaviour in situations where the license limits were exceeded.
  • Implemented a minor performance fix that should slightly improve startup time on Outlook 2010.
  • Fixed an issue that would under rare circumstances cause copied sent items to be processed multiple times.
  • Fixed an error that occurred when attempting to manually add valid senders to an empty list.
  • Fixed a resizing-related cosmetic issue with the List of Valid Senders
  • [Enterprise only] Fixed a problem with distributing license keys via policies.
  • [Enterprise only] Fixed an issue where dummy text was displayed instead of actual License Information when in Restricted Mode.
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2013-09-30
Lucatec® Mask 4.0.0 - 2011-11-11
Major Feature Release
  • Active Sig Macros: Two new signature macros, UserDetail and SenderDetail are available, allowing you to dynamically include arbitrary property values from the Active Directory User objects corresponding either to the current user or the sender of the current message respectively, e.g. §§UserDetail:title§§ or $$SenderDetail:department$$. This allows you to make signatures even more versatile, especially in combination with the external signature synchronisation feature introduced in Lucatec® Mask 3.0
  • Target History: Lucatec® Mask will now keep a per-sender history of alternative target folders for quicker selection from the Message Options dialog.
  • [Enterprise only] Added new option to always overwrite local modifications to externally synchronized signature files, thus allowing administrators to enforce the content of signature files.
  • Implemented mechanism to ensure that tasks that are usually only performed on Outlook startup (such as signature synchronisation) will be executed at least once a day even when keeping Outlook running for an extended period of time (this is common e.g. on Citrix/Terminal Server or in virtualized environments)
  • When enabling Lucatec® Mask's signature insertion feature for the first time, it will now automatically migrate any existing default signature settings to its Default Message Options, thus making the transition from Outlook's built-in signature mechanism even more seamless.
  • Fixed a major issue with identifying the primary account in Outlook 2010 when there were multiple Exchange accounts in the profile. This caused a variety of issues, e.g. the USER* signature macros sometimes expanded to an incorrect account.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the installer to use up an additional license. This made it impossible to update an installation that was already registered for a single user.
  • Fixed an issue that on some systems was responsible for requiring two Outlook restarts before any changes to the "Insert Signatures" option were actually applied.
  • Implemented a workaround for an issue with the new polling mechanism that was causing significant delays (= several days in extreme cases) in message processing when there was a large number of items in the Sent Items folder at the time when the polling option was enabled.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2012-05-31
Lucatec® Mask 3.1.1 - 2012-01-31
Major Service Release
  • Ported back a number of stability fixes from the latest Lucatec® Mask 4.x releases:
    • Finally managed to get to the root of the issue where sent items were no longer processed after migrating to Exchange 2010 with the help of several customers and Microsoft support (thanks to all involved!). Lucatec® Mask 3.1.0 SR1 - 2011-08-18
Hot Fix Release
  • Improved reliability of the new "From"-list integration feature after changes in recent Outlook 2010 hotfixes broke it on some systems.
Lucatec® Mask 3.1.0 - 2011-08-11
Intermediate Feature and Technology Release
  • "Expand-on-sync" Signature Macros: Previously, when you used dynamic placeholders like $$USERSMTPADDRESS$$ inside of signatures these would only work directly upon message creation: If you switched the signature later on or when you always inserted signatures manually, the placeholders would not get expanded. To resolve this problem there is now a new class of dynamic placeholders that can be used in combination with the External Signatures feature. By delimiting the macros using §§ instead of $$ (e.g. §§USERDISPLAYNAME§§) you can now force them to be expanded already as they are copied into your profile and will thus always contain the expanded information regardless of how or when you insert them.
Two notes on using the §§INCLUDE:"FileName"§§ macro:
    • If you use relative paths for referencing an external file, the path will be interpreted as relative to the source folder of the external signature.
    • Changing the contents of the included file will not refresh the local signature. If you want the included content to always be up to date, use the regular $$INCLUDE$$-macro instead.
  • Two new signature macros are available for inserting information about the sender of the current message:
    • $$SENDERDISPLAYNAME$$
    • $$SENDERSMTPADDRESS$$
Please note that these two are not available as "expand-on-sync" macros.
  • Another new signature macro is $$SIG:"SigName"$$ which will include the contents of another (local!) signature, thus allowing you to concatenate multiple signatures, like it was possible before Lucatec® Mask 2.2.0. This is also available as an "expand-on-sync" macro.
  • Outlook 2010 only: There's now an option to have Lucatec® Mask's Valid Senders automatically added to the new "From"-dropdown selection list. This way it should no longer be necessary to use the addin's Message Options dialog for sender selection.
  • The installer got a major overhaul: Rather than duplicating the addin's options for setting up the default configuration, it now displays the actual Options dialog that is also used inside the addin itself. This actually allows install-time access to some options that were so far only available at run-time. As a side-effect unattended installation via configuration files got a lot more powerful, too. Please note that options which require a live Outlook profile to set up (such as the Default Message Options and the list of Valid Senders) are not available at install-time.
  • Fixed an issue that could occur when opening an item from the Outbox folder before sending it while the option to "Save replies with original message" was turned on.
  • Fixed a timing issue that could sometimes prevent the addin core from being loaded.
  • Fixed an issue where the text on the update notification dialog was truncated for some localizations.
  • Removed the "not recommended" moniker from the option to "Always use polling to detect new sent items"as it turns out that a. the performance impact in practice is negligible and b. there are more use cases for this option than we originally envisioned. So, feel free to enable this when you're having problems with Sent Items not being moved or copied to their intended target folders. The "off"-state is still the preferred one, though.

Lucatec® Mask 3.0.3 - 2011-05-18
Customer-requested Feature Release
  • Added functionality to automatically synchronize the Out-of-Office status and auto-reply text of all additional mailboxes in the current Outlook profile with that of the primary mailbox.
More fine-grained configuration options (e.g. allowing per-mailbox configuration and the ability to adjust settings of additional mailboxes directly rather than just by synchronization) are likely to be added in future releases.
  • Added proper configuration GUI for some recently added options that were so far only accessible via direct registry access, namely "Set Replied/Forwarded status indicator on items in Public Folders", "Use Sender Options of original recipient" and "Always use polling to detect new sent items" (see release notes for 3.0.1 and 3.0.2 for slightly longer explanations of these options).
  • Fixed a regression that caused some texts visible to users (most notably "Please choose a sender..."-text that is displayed on the Message Options dialog before sending and the name of the "Lucatec® Mask Signature") to always be displayed in English regardless of actual language selection. Please note that as a result of this fix an Outlook restart will now sometimes be required after changing the language before signature insertion will again work as expected.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2011-11-30
Lucatec® Mask 3.0.2 - 2011-04-19
Customer-requested private Service Release
  • Implemented workaround for a known issue in the communication between Outlook 2003 and Exchange 2010 with Cached Mode disabled that prevented Lucatec® Mask from processing sent items (might require manual registry tweaking to enable in some environments - contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for details).
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
Lucatec® Mask 3.0.1 - 2011-03-29
Service Release with some experimental new features
  • On customer request, added experimental option (off by default) to set the replied/forwarded status icons on messages in Public Folders (requires "Editor" permissions - for now, configurable via registry only - contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for details).
  • Added experimental option (off by default) to extended the behaviour of "Reply and forward on behalf of original recipient"-feature: When a sender has been determined via this feature, Lucatec® Mask can now also read the target folder from the corresponding entry in the list of Valid Senders (if available - for now, configurable via registry only - contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for details).
  • Improved general robustness and fault tolerance of message preparation code, e.g. an unexpected error while determining a message's target folder should no longer cause signature insertion to fail as well and vice versa.
  • Fixed an issue in the installer that caused misleading error messages about invalid license keys when upgrading a registered version 2.x installation. This was also making unattended installation impossible.
  • Fixed an issue where the addin's "Automatic" language setting would incorrectly load the German translation, when the system default language was German and the Office display language was American English.
  • Fixed an issue where items that were still in the Outbox when Outlook was shut down were no longer processed when they were eventually delivered in a later Outlook session.
  • Fixed an issue where external signature files with dots in their names were not correctly synchronized.
  • Fixed an issue where the Default Naming Rules for signatures were not effective inside the primary mailbox.
  • Fixed an issue where error messages would sometimes appear behind the Outlook main window
  • Implemented a partial workaround for an issue that could occur when using Outlook rules for outgoing messages in Outlook 2003 with Exchange Cached Mode turned off.
  • Implemented workaround for a compatibility issue with the "Zarafa" mail server (and potentially other Exchange-replacements, too)
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2011-09-30
Lucatec® Mask 3.0.0 - 2010-10-25
Major Feature and Technology Release
  • Added support for multi-language installation, i.e. a single installation can now contain multiple user interface languages that can later be switched on a per user basis. By default, Lucatec® Mask will automatically use the language used by Outlook itself (if available). For now, the following languages are provided:
    English, German
If you want to translate Lucatec® Mask to your own language please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • Lucatec® Mask can now automatically synchronize local signatures with a list of external files at Outlook startup.
  • The following (case-sensitive) placeholders can now be used in signatures and will be automatically expanded before insertion:
    • $$USERDISPLAYNAME$$: The display name of the current user
    • $$USERSMTPADDRESS$$: The e-mail address of the current user
    • $$INCLUDE:"FileName"$$: The contents of the specified file. The fully-qualified file name may include environment variables such as %ALLUSERSPROFILE%, %HOMESHARE% or %TEMP%.
Note that the quotes around the file name are mandatory and may not be omitted even when the file name does not contain spaces!
  • In order to avoid having to explicitly set up signatures for large numbers of shared mailboxes or Public Folders by hand it is now possible to simply define a default naming rule which will be used to construct signature names, e.g. when creating a new message in a mailbox called "Accounting" Lucatec® Mask would now by default attempt to use a signature named "Accounting Signature".
The following placeholders can currently be used in the naming rules:
    • %0:s: the display name of the account associated with a mailbox or folder
    • %1:s: the name of the relevant folder (not its full path)
    • %2:s: the name part of the associated SMTP-address (i.e. the bit before the @-symbol)
    • %3:s: the complete SMTP-address of the account associated with a mailbox or folder
The initial default naming rule is "%0:s Signature" which would result in names such as in the example given above.
  • Lucatec® Mask now officially supports Outlook 2010 completely, including a new "Backstage View" to replace the Option Page used for previous versions of Outlook.
  • There is now an option to use the original recipient of a message as the sender when replying or forwarding. Senders that were explicitly set via Folder Options or Default Message Options will always take precedence. Also, for messages addressed to mail-enabled Public Folders unambiguously determining the original recipient may not always be possible.
  • There is now an option to remove the sender account from the list of recipients when doing a Reply All
  • The List of Valid Senders now supports multi-selection using Shift-click and Ctrl-click thus allowing you to remove multiple entries from the list in one go.
  • When specifying oneself as the intended sender for a shared folder Lucatec® Mask will now ask for confirmation of this (If you want messages to be sent on behalf of the respective current user, just leave the sender entry blank).
  • When manually changing the sender of a message to the primary user (or when blanking the From field) Lucatec® Mask would always prompt about a manually changed From field even when the corresponding option was deactivated. This has now been adjusted
  • Support for Outlook versions earlier than 2003 has been removed.
  • The licensing mechanism now supports four times as many users on a single license key than before.
  • Fixed an issue where the entry boxes and buttons on the Folder Options tab were sometimes clipped at the right edge.
  • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2011-03-31

Major Service Release
  • Ported back a number of stability fixes from the latest Lucatec® Mask 3.x releases:

    • Fixed an issue where error messages would sometimes appear behind the Outlook main window
    • Implemented a partial workaround for an issue that could occur when using Outlook rules for outgoing messages in Outlook 2003 with Exchange Cached Mode turned off.
    • Implemented workaround for a compatibility issue with the "Zarafa" mail server (and potentially other Exchange-replacements, too)
    • Fixed an issue where the entry boxes and buttons on the Folder Options tab were sometimes clipped at the right edge.
    • Updated several third-party products involved in building Lucatec® Mask.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2011-09-30
Lucatec® Mask 2.3.8 - 2010-10-20
Minor Service Release
  • Fixed two issues related to the error message that gets shown when the addin's core fails to load for some reason: sometimes that message was partially hidden behind Outlook's splash screen and furthermore it was always shown twice.
  • Fixed an issue where some texts in the main options were always shown in English regardless of actual localizations when the addin was inactive.
  • Very long paths that do not fit in the Target Folder entry field on the Message Options dialog are now displayed in a shortened form.
  • Updated a third-party library involved in building the product. As a result:
    • Various fatal errors that some customers experienced on Outlook startup with messages such as "Cannot set allocations", "Failed to load core - Invalid access to memory location" should no longer occur with this release.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2011-03-31
Lucatec® Mask 2.3.7 - 2010-08-13
Minor Service Release
  • Lucatec® Mask can now automatically check for available updates
  • Added support for Outlook 2010's Fast Shutdown mode

  • Fixed a number of rarely encountered race conditions related to registry access
  • Updated several third-party libraries involved in building the product.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2010-12-31
Lucatec® Mask 2.3.6 - 2010-06-14
Minor Service Release
  • Fixed an issue where specifying a Public Folder Favorite as the target folder for sent items caused a misleading error message on send.
  • Fixed an issue where messages based on drafts created during a previous Outlook session were not moved to their designated target folders.
  • Implemented a workaround for an issue specific to the combination of Windows Vista (or higher), Outlook 2003 (or lower) and use of the WordMail-editor where the Message Options dialog would often freeze for several minutes.
  • Fixed an issue that occurred in Outlook 2010 RTM where the sender display was only updated correctly on the first message created during an Outlook session.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2010-11-30
Lucatec® Mask 2.3.5 - 2010-03-16
Minor Service Release
  • Fixed an issue where unauthorised users (in Citrix/Terminal Server environments) were able to manually enable the addin and thus unnecessarily use up licenses.
  • Fixed an issue where, after an error during message preparation, dummy signature text would be inserted into the message.
  • Pressing Ctrl-C on the License Details dialog will now copy the "raw" license information to the clipboard (i.e. just licensee name and license key without caption or other additional info), ready to be pasted into the Registration dialog.
  • Fixed an issue where in non-Exchange environments inserted senders were often not accepted, prompting incorrect error messages about failed name resolution.
  • This release was successfully tested with Exchange 2010. Note that there currently exists a known issue when using Outlook 2003 or older in Online Mode (i.e. Cached Exchange Mode disabled) affecting Lucatec® Mask in such a way that sent messages will not be processed (i.e. moved). We are currently investigating possible workarounds.
  • When making changes to the Valid Senders list the OK button on the Options dialog will now be enabled.
  • Fixed outdated description in dummy signature text.
  • Updated several third-party libraries involved in building the product.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2010-08-31
Lucatec® Mask 2.3.4 - 2010-01-11

  • Fixed an issue that affected automatic detection of senders and target folders under Outlook 2000.
  • Added an installer option to allow entering licensing information also in Express Setup Mode
  • Made sure OfficeHook addin respects addin's inactive state as well (only applies to Office 2003 and earlier).
  • Updated several third-party libraries involved in building the product
Lucatec® Mask 2.3.3 - 2009-10-06
Minor Service Release
  • Rather than just displaying "<None>", the names of configured signatures that do not or no longer exist in the local user profile will now be displayed using a grayed-out, italic font in the signature selection boxes.
  • Made sure that the From field is properly updated in the Outlook 2010 Tech Preview.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2010-05-31
Enterprise Mode only:
  • Fixed an issue where in Restricted Mode it was still possible to activate and deactivate the addin.
  • Fixed an issue where Restricted Mode was not enforced while the addin was inactive.
  • Fixed compatibility issue with Windows 2008 in ADM-file
Lucatec® Mask 2.3.2 - 2009-06-24
Minor Service Release
  • Fixed a regression in the "OfficeHook" module that caused the "Send to mail recipient as attachment" function in Word and Excel to longer work
  • When you disable the option to verify message options after manual changes to the From field the message options dialog will now really no longer be shown given that the sender you entered manually has already been set up in the list of Valid Senders.
  • Fixed an issue where after the latest Office updates Lucatec® Mask would often and unexpectedly display error messages with non-user-friendly texts such as "Error in IMsgStore::OpenEntry: MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND" - (note that this fix only applies for Outlook XP and later)
  • Implemented a new default mechanism for resolving sender names in an attempt to resolve occasional errors in medium to large installations (100 users or more)
  • Slightly improved a situation that could occur if a sender name could not be resolved via the GAL. Previously such a sender would always be removed and as a result Lucatec® Mask would display a misleading warning about a changed sender asking the user to select a new sender. Now the addin will display a proper error message alerting the user to the name resolution problem.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2009-12-31
Lucatec® Mask 2.3.1 - 2009-05-26
Minor Service Release
  • Implemented a workaround for an issue introduced by Service Pack 2 for Office 2007 where sent items would no longer be moved. Also see this blog entry for details.
  • When installing on a Terminal Server the setup will now offer an option to install the addin in inactive state, so it could later be explicitly enabled for those users that will actually use it.
  • Fixed an issue where the addin failed to load on startup.
  • Fixed an issue where an incorrect signature could be inserted when the desired signature did not exist in the required format (i.e. HTML/TXT/RTF)
  • Fixed an issue where under rare circumstances the actual sender name would be transmitted to the recipient.
  • Fixed an issue where some error message popups would display misleading version information in the title bar.
  • A message will now be displayed on the main options tab when there are pending changes to the configuration that require Outlook to be restarted to become effective.
  • Added extended version and credits information, available by clicking the version label on the main options tab.
Lucatec® Mask 2.3.0 - 2009-04-09
Major Technology Milestone and Minor Feature Release
  • Separated addin into a "loader" component and a "core" component to alleviate some special case issues related to the licensing mechanism.
  • The "core" addin will no longer load (and thus unnecessarily use up licenses) for "hidden" instances of Outlook, e.g. as are invoked by mobile device synchronization software like Microsoft ActiveSync.
  • Redesigned main addin options GUI
  • The "Save actual sender with sent messages options" can now be set via the main addin options.
  • The two options "Save replies with original message" and "Don't save messages in same folder for non-mail-enabled Public Folders" can now also be set via the main addin options.
  • The settings previously combined under the label "User Options" have now been relabelled as "Default Message Options" as the previous moniker was confusing to a lot of users.
  • The installer now supports an "Express install mode" which allows skipping manual configuration and instead using typical settings (or simply keeping previous settings in case of an update installation)
  • The installer now allows to specify that on the next Outlook startup a one-time-only Profile Scan for valid senders should be performed.
  • Fixed a bug in the License-by-registry code that was incorrectly assuming that licensee names and license keys had to be case-sensitive.
  • Updated several third-party tools and libraries involved in building the product.
  • This release has been successfully tested on Windows 7 Beta 1 (Build 7000)
Lucatec® Mask 2.2.3 SR1 - 2009-03-18

Lucatec® Mask 2.2.2 - 2008-12-03
Minor Service Release containing third-party updates and customer-requested experimental features
  • The folder selection tool will now start with the previous selected folder.
  • Fixed an issue where senders were inserted into the wrong message window when opening multiple WordMail editors at the same time.
  • Fixed an issue that made it impossible to define a blank target folder (i.e. prevent sent messages from being moved) by pressing DEL in the relevant Folder Options entry box.
  • On customer request, implemented option to control default sent target of non-mail-enabled folders (can now be blank - for now, configurable via registry only - contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for details).
  • On customer request, added experimental option to have replies and forwards stored in the same folder as the original message (for now, configurable via registry only - contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for details).
  • Updated several third-party tools and libraries involved in building the product.
Lucatec® Mask 2.2.1 - 2008-09-15
Major Service Release
  • You can now add an additional column to your folder views (via the Folder Options) which will display the actual sender of outgoing messages for internal reference Note: This will only apply to messages sent since the option was first enabled - it can not add this information for messages sent in the past.
  • Error messages for common internal errors during message preparation should now be more descriptive.
  • Fixed an issue where HTML signatures with embedded images that were saved by Microsoft Word in Unicode format did not get inserted correctly.
  • Improved handling of signatures with special characters in their names. Note that signatures with certain special characters (especially Unicode ones) appearing in their names can currently not be handled by Lucatec® Mask. Such signatures will now no longer be available for selection from the Folder Options and User Options dialogs. Note that this restriction only applies to the name of a signature, not its actual contents.
  • Fixed an issue where the toolbar icon would always indicate modifications to the Message Options even when there weren't any.
  • Fixed several issues that could cause the From field display not to be updated.
  • Made the Office Hook component (introduced in Lucatec® Mask 2.2.0) optional in the installer. Note that the Office Hook is only needed for Word/Excel 2003 and earlier.
  • Fixed a regression introduced in version 2.2.0 where the addin would no longer show the Select Names dialog when a user entered an invalid or ambiguous sender name into a Sender entry field (e.g. on the Folder Options tab).
  • The addin will now automatically retry to resolve a sender name in case of unexpected errors. This should allow the addin to cope better with unstable or high-load network environments. By default it will retry the name resolution up to 3 times at a 50ms interval.
  • Fixed an issue where the installer was not picking up options set in a previous installation
  • Lucatec® Mask will now display a warning message when setting up target folders that other users might not have access to.
  • Fixed an issue where signatures created with Microsoft Word would sometimes not show up in the drop-down selection lists
  • Minor performance optimizations
  • Fixed some minor memory leaks in third-party libraries.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2009-03-15
Lucatec® Mask 2.2.0 SR2 - 2008-03-26
Minor interim hotfix release
  • Fixed an issue where Target Folders stored in Sender Options did not become effective after changes to a message's sender when User Options were in effect.
  • Fixed a long standing issue where the pre-send checks (i.e. detection of manual sender changes or auto-displaying the Message Options) would no longer trigger if closing the message window had previously been cancelled.
  • Fixed an issue where the From display was sometimes not updated on non-English versions of Outlook 2003 and earlier when using Word to edit E-Mails.
  • Fixed an installer issue that caused sending documents from Word or Excel not to work properly when using Outlook 2007 together with earlier versions of Word or Excel.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2008-09-30
Lucatec® Mask 2.2.0 SR1 - 2008-01-25
Minor interim hotfix release
  • Fixed an issue where it was sometimes not possible to override the sender for replies from shared mailboxes.
  • Fixed an issue where setting a blank sender (i.e. "send as self") in the Folder Options sometimes had no effect.
Lucatec® Mask 2.2.0 - 2007-12-14
Major platform compatibility release
  • Signature insertion now also works in Outlook 2007 or when using Word to edit E-Mails. *
  • The From display is now also updated when using Word to edit E-Mails. *
  • The Message Options toolbar button is now also available when using Word to edit E-Mails. *
  • Added a large Message Options button for the Outlook 2007 Ribbon Control (on the Options tab)
  • Fixed: Under Outlook XP with WordMail enabled, creating a new message or changing the sender of a message sometimes triggered a security prompt.
  • Updated a third-party component that was responsible for various Vista-related issues.
  • Fixed: On Windows Vista Lucatec® Mask failed to detect the correct Sent Items folders for secondary mailboxes.
  • Various subtle GUI tweaks to better "fit in" with Windows Vista
  • Signature insertion can now do everything that Outlook's built-in signature feature can, including embedded images.
  • The option to have deleted items moved into the deleted items folder of the mailbox they were deleted from can now be preset via the installer.
  • As Outlook XP does not use XP themes itself and enabling that option also led to some minor display quirks, the XP Themes option has been disabled in the installer for that Outlook version.
  • The Message Options toolbar button finally got an icon!
  • Lucatec® Mask now also works when invoking a new message from Word or Excel using File | Send to > Mail recipient (as Attachment)
  • Fixed a regression issue (introduced around v2.1.1) where manually clearing the "From" field no longer resulted in the Sender and Sent target being reset.
  • Fixed: When changing the From field manually and no Valid Senders were defined the addin would sometimes store the sent item to the wrong folder.
  • Loads of minor fixes and optimizations
  • Trial expiry date set to 2008-06-30
Important notes about backwards-compatibility in this release:
  • As a side-effect of the completely rewritten signature insertion code, you can no longer have Outlook insert the default signature in addition to the one inserted by Lucatec® Mask. Note: Starting with Lucatec® Mask version 3.1.0 this is again possible via the $$SIG$$ signature macro..
  • The "Use Reply-To instead of From" option has been temporarily disabled. It will be brought back in a future release. If you are currently using this feature, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ASAP.
  •  If in Outlook 2000 the option to use Microsoft Word for editing E-Mails is enabled the addin does not work at all. If you require this functionality please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ASAP.
  • In Outlook 2000 signature insertion does currently not work correctly.
  • In Outlook 2000 editing the Folder Options of a mailbox's root folder does currently not work (message "Insufficient rights").

(See Lucatec® Mask 2.2.0 for details)
Lucatec® Mask 2.1.2 - 2007-08-28
Minor service release
  • You can now turn off the Message Options auto-popup that appears after a sender has been entered or changed manually in the From field. Note that the dialog will still pop up when the entered sender has not been configured in the Sender Options. This is so you can still choose a suitable target folder for the sent message.
  • The overall handling of manual From entries has been improved - the behaviour should now be more robust and predictable, especially when no Sender Options have been configured.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2008-03-31
Lucatec® Mask 2.1.1 - 2007-07-18
Medium feature release
  • Message Options dialog: allows you to modify the Sender and Sent Item target folder after a new message has been created. It's available via a new button on the new message inspector. This means that you can now send messages on behalf of other users from any folder without having to bother about where the sent message goes - in earlier versions of the addin there was no way to change this once the message had been created.
    • The Message Options can optionally be shown automatically whenever you send a message, thus allowing you to verify that the correct options will be used or simply to set them at that time.
    • If you enabled the option to automatically show the Message Options dialog on send, you can also specify a list of individual recipients or email domains for which you want to suppress this behaviour - for instance you might not want to be bothered by the dialog when sending internal messages to co-workers.
  • Sender Options: These allow you to set up a list of valid senders that you can later choose from in the Message Options dialog.
    • In addition to merely defining a list of senders you can also associate these senders with their corresponding message options (currently only the Sent Item target folder but likely to be extended in the future) with the effect that selecting a sender on the Message Options dialog will automatically set the remaining message options accordingly.
    • In order to make the setup of the Valid Senders list as easy as possible we have included a Profile Scan function that will automatically populate the list based on the information already available in your Outlook profile. This can also be set to run automatically when Outlook starts up so your list will always be up to date.
  • Improved "From" handling: The addin will now notice when you change the contents of a message's From field after the message has already been created. If your changes differ from the sender that the addin would have inserted based on folder context, it will use the Valid Senders information to adjust the remaining message options (i.e. the Sent Item target folder) accordingly. Upon sending your message it will allow you to verify and confirm these settings via the Message Options dialog.
  • If a user does not have sufficient privileges to edit the Folder Options in a folder the options will be disabled right from the start instead of showing an error message only on Apply.
  • Recursive Folder Options now work correctly with Favorite Public Folders, i.e. they will pick up their parent's options even when the parent was not a favorite itself.
  • Folder Options can now also be configured for non-mail folders.
  • Preliminary support for XP visual styles aka "themes". (Note that enabling this option will potentially affect other third-party addins as well.)
  • Lots of under-the-hood changes and optimizations.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2008-01-31
Lucatec® Mask 2.1.0 - 2006-10-12
Customer-requested Feature Release
Lucatec® Mask 2.0.1 - 2007-01-04
Hotfix release
  • Fixed a regression bug: Sent items were moved even after the sender had been manually cleared.
  • Updated all third-party tools and libraries involved in building the product.
  • Trial expiry date set to 2007-07-31
Lucatec® Mask 2.0.0 - 2006-05-23
Major feature release
  • Recursive Folder Options: Options set on a folder can now automatically propagate to sub-folders.
  • Signatures: Auto-insert individual signatures on a folder-by-folder basis. (Note that signature-insertion does currently not work when you use Microsoft Word to compose eMail messages.)
  • Use Reply-To instead of From: You can now configure Lucatec® Mask so that it will no longer set the sender address of sent messages but instead insert that address as the reply address of the message. (Note though that this does currently not work (reliably) when you use Microsoft Word to compose eMail messages.)
  • Folder Options inside Own Mailbox: You can now control all Mask options (i.e. sender/reply address, target folder for sent items and signatures) for folders inside your own primary mailbox as well. No Public Folders or shared mailboxes required anymore!
  • No more Exchange Server required: As a consequence of the above it is now possible to use Lucatec® Mask in Exchange-free environments as well. All you need is a mail server that allows specifying an address other than your own in the From field. Even if your mail server does not support this setup you can still use the new Reply-To functionality (see above). (Note that Lucatec® Mask does currently not affect which internet mail account gets used. Thus getting the From-field approach to work will often require some additional server-side configuration.)
  • Smart Reply/Forward handling: When replying or forwarding, the message options are now based on the parent folder of the message being replied to/forwarded rather than the currently selected one. This finally enables Lucatec® Mask to kick in when replying to items opened from a New Message Notification window or Advanced Search results. Previously the addin would do nothing at all in those cases. This change also resolves the somewhat confusing situation where you open a message from one folder, change the folder selection and then later reply to the opened message.
  • Sent items moving/copying is no longer tied to changing the sender address, i.e. you could now also move or copy messages that are sent on your own behalf.
  • Ambiguous address book entries are now resolved automatically. No more need to fiddle with SMTP addresses.
  • Surfaced undocumented Outlook option to move deleted items into the Deleted Items folder of the mailbox they were deleted from.
  • Lots of bug fixes and cosmetic changes.
  • Expiry date for trial versions is 2006-12-31
